An old deck that has gone soft, splintery, or wobbly is more than an eyesore. It is a safety problem. Tearing it out yourself is absolutely doable over a weekend, but deck demolition creates a surprising volume of bulky, awkward, nail-filled debris. A little planning keeps the project safe and keeps the cleanup from becoming its own headache. Deck teardowns are one of the most common jobs we see on home renovation dumpster rentals.
Start from the top down. Pull the deck boards first, working from the outside edge back toward the house. A pry bar and a drill for backing out screws will be your two best friends. Once the decking is off, you are left with the framing, the joists, the ledger board, and the support posts, which come apart in a logical order from there. The stack fills more space than people expect, so it helps to compare the 15 and 20-yard sizes first.
Watch the fasteners. The single biggest hazard in deck demo is not the lumber, it is the nails and screws sticking out of it. Keep a magnetic sweeper or a sturdy bucket nearby and pull or bend over exposed nails as you go. Wear gloves and closed-toe boots the entire time, and keep kids and pets well clear of the work zone.
Plan for the footings. Most decks sit on concrete footings sunk into the ground. Smaller ones can be dug out and broken up, but remember that concrete is extremely heavy. If you are tossing footings into a dumpster along with the wood, mention it when you book, because concrete affects the weight calculation and may need to be handled separately.
