Water damage has a timeline that most other home problems do not. After a flood or major pipe failure, mold begins developing in wet building materials within 24 to 48 hours under typical indoor conditions. That window determines how quickly water-damaged drywall, insulation, flooring, and furniture need to come out. The EPA publishes mold cleanup guidance for homes if you want the drying details. What to remove first: saturated drywall, wet insulation, and water-logged flooring are the priority because they are the fastest to mold and the most difficult to dry out once saturated. Furniture and personal items come out simultaneously but the structural material is what determines whether the space can be salvaged. Cut wet drywall out from the floor up to at least a foot above the water line, more if the flooding was significant. A flooded level fills more container than people expect, so compare the 15 and 20 yard sizes before you book.
What goes in the dumpster: drywall, insulation, flooring, carpet and pad, damaged furniture, and general demolition debris from the cleanup all load normally, the same as on any home renovation dumpster rental. Wood framing that is cut out, baseboards, doors, and cabinets that were submerged also go in without issue.
What does not go in the dumpster: any appliance with Freon that was damaged in the flood needs to be handled through a certified appliance recycler, not a standard dumpster.
