Flooring replacement projects generate two very different types of debris depending on what you are pulling up. Carpet and pad is bulky and light. Tile is compact and extremely heavy. Knowing which type you are dealing with changes how you think about container size and weight, and getting that wrong is one of the more common sources of overage charges on a home renovation dumpster rental.
Carpet and padding: the challenge here is volume. Rolled carpet takes up a lot of space, but it is relatively light. A full house of carpet and pad, say 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, generates a significant pile. Cut carpet into manageable rolls, 8 to 10 feet long works well, before tossing it in the container. Flat loading carpet maximizes how much fits and keeps the bin from filling up with air pockets. Tile and stone: the challenge here is weight. Ceramic and porcelain tile runs 4 to 6 lbs per square foot. Natural stone like slate or travertine runs heavier. Break up full tiles before loading when possible, because large intact pieces do not stack well and waste space. Even with efficient loading, a full tile floor job can put significant weight in the container before it looks half full. Mixing flooring types: if you are pulling up carpet in some rooms and tile in others, the mix can actually work in your favor. Lighter carpet helps offset the dense tile weight-wise while both fill the container. Just be aware of where you stand on the weight limit as you load. If the tile section feels heavy early, spread it through the load rather than front-loading all the dense material.
For most single-room or single-floor flooring replacements, a 15-yard container works. Whole-house flooring removal, especially with tile, tends to need a 20-yard.
