The Keep, Donate, Dump Method: Sorting Belongings Before a Move

Moving is the best opportunity you will ever have to sort through everything you own. Here is a system that makes the decisions faster and keeps you from paying to move things you do not need.

Topics: moving cleanouts • downsizing • project planning

Moving is expensive, and one of the hidden costs is paying movers to transport things you did not want in the first place. Every box that goes on the truck costs money in packing materials, moving labor, and space in the vehicle. Sorting before the move rather than after is one of the simplest ways to reduce that cost and arrive at a new home with only what you actually want there. A moving cleanout dumpster rental makes that sort a lot easier.

The three-category system works because it forces a decision at the item level. Everything gets evaluated and placed in one of three buckets: keep, donate, or dump. There is no fourth pile for things you are not sure about yet. Undecided items have a tendency to keep showing up in every future sort until you finally decide, so forcing the decision now, when there is real motivation to simplify, produces better results.

Keep: things you actively use, things with genuine sentimental value, and things that would cost more to replace than to move. Be honest about the difference between something you use and something you might use someday.

Donate: items in usable condition that someone else would actually want. Furniture, kitchen items, clothing in good shape, working electronics. Donation centers around Cincinnati include Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStores, and various local charities. Call ahead to confirm they are accepting the items you have. The same three buckets work for a student move out cleanup at the end of a lease.

Dump: anything broken beyond repair, worn out, or that failed to sell or get donated in a reasonable timeframe. This is what the dumpster is for. Having a roll-off on the driveway during the sort phase means you can move dump-pile items out of the house continuously instead of staging them in a garage or spare room. Sizing that container is covered in our dumpster size comparison.

For most pre-move cleanouts in Monroe, Mason, and Fairfield, a 15-yard container covers the dump pile well. If you are leaving behind a significant amount of furniture or clearing a property that includes a garage and basement, consider the 20-yard to handle it in one pass.
