There is a short list of things we will not take in a roll-off. It is not a long list, and it is not arbitrary. A few items are unsafe to haul. The landfill won't accept others in a mixed load. The rest need a recycler built to handle them. Knowing the list before you start loading beats pulling items back out on pickup day. Here is what stays out of our containers and where each one should go instead. For a broader rundown of household items, the state keeps a plain-language guide on the Ohio EPA household waste page.
Hazardous chemicals: pesticides, herbicides, motor oil, antifreeze, solvents, and other automotive or household chemicals stay out of our containers. They belong in a household hazardous waste program instead, which is set up to take them. Butler County and Hamilton County both have periodic collection events. Our guide to Butler and Hamilton County recycling centers lists where to take them.
Appliances with refrigerant: refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers hold Freon or a similar refrigerant, and that has to be recovered by a certified tech before the unit gets scrapped. We cannot take them in the container. Most appliance retailers run haul-away programs, and dedicated appliance recyclers handle them too. We walk through the local options in our Cincinnati electronics and appliance disposal guide.
Tires, car batteries, and wet paint: we do not haul any of the three. Tire shops and auto parts stores take used tires for a small fee, and most places that sell car batteries will take the old one back. Wet paint counts as a liquid, so it stays out of the container. Dried latex paint is fine, so pop the lid off and let it harden first. Oil-based paint needs the hazardous waste route no matter how dry it looks.
Heavy fill materials: concrete, dirt, brick, and asphalt are a different case. We will haul them, but we set them up separately because of what they weigh. Mixing heavy fill into a residential load can push it far past the weight limit before the container even looks full. If your project includes real quantities of fill, call us before you start loading and we will size it right. Our list of what we will haul covers the rest.
When in doubt, call Jason at 513-484-2414 and describe the item. We will tell you straight whether it rides in the container or needs to go somewhere else. One phone call beats unloading half a dumpster on pickup day.
