The Homeowner's Guide to Recycling Centers in Butler and Hamilton Counties

Not everything belongs in a dumpster. Here is where to take the items that need special handling: Freon appliances, electronics, hazardous household waste, and tires across Butler and Hamilton counties.

Topics: recycling • prohibited items • local resources

A roll-off dumpster handles most renovation and cleanout debris without any issues. But certain materials cannot legally or safely go into a standard landfill, and knowing where to take those items is part of doing a cleanout responsibly. Here is a practical guide to what goes where in Butler and Hamilton counties.

Household hazardous waste: Butler County Solid Waste District operates hazardous waste collection events and drop-off programs for items like pesticides, motor oil, paints, and solvents. Their program is free for Butler County residents and accepts a wide range of materials that would otherwise be prohibited from dumpsters. Check the Butler County Solid Waste District website for current event dates and locations.

Electronics and e-waste: computers, televisions, phones, and other electronics contain materials that require specialized recycling. Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District offers e-waste drop-off programs. Several electronics retailers also accept items for recycling. Do not put these in a standard dumpster.

Appliances with refrigerant: refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers must have refrigerant recovered before disposal. Licensed appliance recyclers in the area can handle this. Some utility companies run rebate programs for old appliances that include proper recycling.

Tires: tire retailers are required by Ohio law to accept used tires for a small fee. Auto parts stores also typically accept them. Tires are banned from standard landfills because of how they affect landfill structure over time.

The cleanest approach to a big cleanout is to sort these items out before the dumpster arrives and make a separate trip or schedule a separate pickup for them. That way everything that can go in the container does, and the items that cannot are handled properly without slowing down the main project.
